September 2022.
When we bought a house in Denver, it came with a garden, and a history. The home had belonged to Matt and Elaine Mateyka, and Matt had made a second career (according the neighbors, his first was in the CIA) as a television gardener. Matt had died two decades earlier, but the bones of a great garden—lilacs, peonies, and roses—were still there.
I promptly joined the Denver Rose Society to learn how to care for the Mateyka’s roses. It was through the DRS that I first learned of the ‘Peace’ rose. When I saw that author Barbara Carroll Roberts had written a nonfiction picture book about this incredible rose, I couldn’t wait to interview her to learn more. The story of how this amazing book came to be was published in the September/October issue of American Rose magazine.

Nice article, Susan. Fortunately, my local library has the book, so I will be reading it soon. Thanks for the post.
